On September 8, 2023, Emancipate NC and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice supported the Move the Monument Coalition by sending a letter to the town of Edenton. The letter asks Edenton to ask the court for a hearing to address the relocation of the Confederate soldier statue from Edenton’s historic waterfront. Despite the unanimous agreement by Edenton’s Town Council to move the statue within the last 18 months, these efforts have been hindered by a baseless lawsuit filed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
“The Confederate soldier statue in Edenton, like Confederate statues everywhere, pays homage and respect to America’s racism,” Emancipate NC’s Jaelyn Miller said. “The Coalition and citizens of Edenton deserve to have their elected officials follow through on their commitment to relocate this statue. The lawsuit that is holding up that commitment isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.” Emancipate NC has been collaborating with the Coalition to protect their right to peacefully protest the statue, testifying at a town meeting and supporting a billboard campaign to bring attention to this issue.
