On January 29, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued Executive Order No. 303, a historic order addressing an improved reentry program for formerly incarcerated people. Emancipate NC’s Kerwin Pittman joined the Governor’s signing of this huge Reentry Executive Order.
This executive order will help massive amounts of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated brothers & sisters by:
- Reducing by 50% the number of incarcerated individuals who are homeless upon release.
- Increasing by 75% the number of high school and post-secondary credentials earned by incarcerated individuals.
- Ensuring all eligible incarcerated individuals are offered the opportunity to apply for Medicaid before release.
- Providing reentry assistance to previously incarcerated people in every county in the state through Local Reentry Councils.
- Increasing the number of post-secondary degrees offered in facilities by 25%.
- Increasing the number of Pell Grant partners by 30%.
- Increasing by 50% the number of apprenticeships completed by incarcerated individuals.
- Increasing the number of second-chance employer partners by 30%,
