By Attorney Jaelyn MillerA criminal record can create barriers to employment, housing, education, and other opportunities long after a person has completed their sentence. That’s why access to expungement and second-chance resources is so important.Emancipate NC was proud to participate in the Community Expungement Clinic & Second Chance Resource Fair, hosted by the NAACP Sanford (Lee County) Branch as part of its Justice Bus Tour initiative. The event brought legal assistance and community resources directly to people seeking a fresh start—and directly served more than 30 individuals seeking expungement and second-chance assistance.Emancipate NC Founder and Executive Director Dawn Blagrove was the featured legal presenter at the event, sharing her expertise and helping community members better understand their rights and options for pursuing expungement.Attorney Jaelyn Miller also participated in the clinic, joining volunteer attorneys who provided confidential eligibility reviews and one-on-one assistance to attendees. Participants received help understanding whether they may qualify for expungement under North Carolina law and assistance completing the necessary paperwork. The clinic recognized that a second chance requires more than legal paperwork. Community members also had access to registration, intake and pre-screening, referrals to community resources, reentry and workforce resources, free health screenings provided by the NAACP Health Committee and Helping Hands Clinic, Spanish-language assistance, and a complimentary lunch for those who pre-registered.Emancipate NC was honored to be among the community partners supporting this effort alongside the Sanford Housing Authority, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Helping Hands Clinic.Expungement can be a powerful tool for removing barriers created by the criminal legal system and helping people move forward. But too often, people who may qualify for relief do not know that an expungement is available to them or lack access to legal assistance to navigate the process.Events like this one help close that gap by bringing information, attorneys, and community resources together in one place. We are grateful to the NAACP Sanford (Lee County) Branch for organizing this important clinic and to community partners who helped make the event possible.A fresh start begins with opportunity—and everyone deserves access to the resources they need to pursue one.
