The racism and hatred that fueled the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 remains powerful in the State of North Carolina. Today, we see an example of white rage in the Republican judicial candidate, Jefferson Griffin, who lost his election for the state Supreme Court. Despite losing the statewide race, he refuses to concede. He invented a claim that 60,000 ballots should be invalidated for a variety of creatively fabricated issues. This judicial election is the last race in the country that remains uncertified after the November 2024 election. It will be litigated in state court, and ultimately the North Carolina Supreme Court may very well try to hand the election to a loser.
Emancipate NC, Common Cause North Carolina, the NC NAACP, and other organizations hosted a forum last week to address questions about the Griffin Steal. We will keep the spotlight on this modern-day election theft and provide guidance to the voters who may have their valid votes thrown away.
“We are in a very scary time,” said Dawn Blagrove, CEO of Emancipate NC. She called Griffin’s effort “a blatant, unadulterated attempt to steal an election.”
