Last week, Dawn Blagrove spoke at Johnson C. Smith University about the intersections between the criminal justice system and the US Constitution.
The theme of the talk, “Looking Back to Go Forward,” meant dissecting how the 13th amendment allowed slavery to simply shift onto a new population of second class citizens: the incarcerated. Essentially, this amendment allowed for the economy based on slave labor to continue to exist, but with changes that made slavery more palatable to the masses.
Dawn led the discussion about how white supremacy thrives by creating illusions of freedom while exploiting stereotypes (like of “bad criminals”) and apathy.
We educate the youth because the youth are our future!
