Team Emancipate is excited to announce a new menu of local policies that reduce or constrain the footprint of armed police to help make our communities genuinely safer, anywhere you live in North Carolina.
Developed by a team of Duke Law students and Emancipate attorneys, the menu includes four policies that NC cities and counties can implement right now — based on pre-existing examples. They include:
- Ending regulatory stops by police
- Requiring police to obtain signed consent to search vehicles
- Creating an unarmed traffic safety team (pending legislation will hopefully expand this opportunity)
- Unarmed alternative crisis response teams to help with mental health crises
The factsheet for each policy includes a host of information and tips for local government workers, community organizers, and advocates to use as a basis for beginning to implement these ideas in their own communities.
