You’ve followed coverage here of the Raleigh police murder of Daniel Turcios in January 2022. Initial media reports described an “intoxicated” man “wielding a knife” and “threatening people” – all part of the police-generated narrative to justify taking this man’s life, when they clearly did not need to do so.
Emancipate NC stood with this family, held a press conference, and has consistently pushed back on this narrative. We told the truth: that Daniel Turcios was not intoxicated or under the influence of drugs; that Daniel Turcios was disoriented from a traumatic car crash; and that Daniel Turcios had a small pocket knife and did not pose any threat to law enforcement or bystanders.
Now, the toxicology screen finally came out. We were right. There were no untoward substances in Daniel Turcios’ body, whatsoever. The police made this story up to discredit a dead man. Remember this next time you see police out in the media trying to justify their decision to shoot a person.
Rest in Peace Daniel.
District Attorney Lorrin Freeman: Now, you must charge Daniel’s killer with homicide.
See coverage on ABC11 via Facebook: “I am infuriated that the Raleigh Police Department used the narrative that Daniel Turcios was drunk to sway the popular opinion,” said Kerwin Pittman of Emancipate NC.
See coverage in the Indy Week: “Because of the outsized power that law enforcement has to create narratives that make them look least culpable at best, it is even more critical that we as a community are very skeptical of initial reports from law enforcement,” says Dawn Blagrove of Emancipate NC.
