A federal judge has ruled that the lawsuit brought by the estate of Darryl Tyree Williams against the Raleigh Police Department can proceed, rejecting the City’s attempts to have the case dismissed. The court has ordered the parties to engage in mediation, with a settlement conference scheduled for April.
Emancipate NC attorneys Ian Mance and Jaelyn Miller, along with nationally recognized civil rights attorney Ben Crump, represent Mr. Williams’ estate.
Darryl Williams was killed by Raleigh police officers in January 2023 after being tased six times in rapid succession. He was unarmed, nonviolent, and repeatedly told officers that he had a heart condition. The final taser deployment occurred after Mr. Williams had been handcuffed and was lying unresponsive on the ground. He died shortly afterward from cardiac arrest.
We will continue to stand alongside Darryl’s family as they seek justice and accountability.
