“‘Hello, parents!’ That was the phrase, offered by Tyre’s mother as a normal greeting from him when he came into the house, that broke me this time.”
So begins Dawn Blagrove’s latest story on Changewire.org, titled “From Memphis to North Carolina, the Problem is White Supremacy.” In it, Dawn cuts through willful misinterpretations of recent police murders and lays bare the truth connecting Darryl Williams, Tyre Nichols, and too many others:
“Maintaining white supremacy has always been the goal of policing. This simple truth is the reason policing cannot be reformed. Modern policing must be abolished, creating space for new systems of safety to rise from its ashes.”
Dawn acknowledges that some people are wary of the term “abolish,” but continues:
“Just like slavery, our violent system of policing can and should be abolished. Is abolition a proposition fraught with unknown? Yes. Does that mean it is not worth the effort? No.”
Emancipate is here to put in that effort. Take the time to read the full reason you should, too, here →
