Team Emancipate has supported too many families of people killed by police, when an unarmed response could have de-escalated the situation and saved lives.
We have talked to too many community members frightened to dial 911 when their loved ones are in crisis because they are afraid of the police.
And we have witnessed, with joy and hope, the successes of the Durham HEART team, bringing skilled, unarmed alternative crisis response to challenging situations, and navigating them with grace.
It is time for Raleigh to have a HEART.
