Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has dismissed 180 criminal cases after determining that two North Carolina state troopers—Garrett Macario and Matthew Morrison—lack credibility as witnesses. The decision follows a growing scandal uncovered during the investigation into the October 7, 2024, death of Tyrone Mason in a car crash involving law enforcement.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation, Trooper Macario gave misleading information to Raleigh police during the initial inquiry. In response, Mr. Mason’s family and their legal team are calling for full transparency, including the release of all dashcam and body-worn camera footage, to help uncover the truth surrounding his death.

This moment underscores the critical need for independent oversight, community accountability, and an end to law enforcement practices that allow dishonesty to go unchecked. Emancipate NC held a press conference. Dawn Blagrove spoke, saying:

“So for [Freeman] to dismiss [180] cases means something egregious happened in this case. And none of us should stop until we know exactly what that is and exactly how deep and how far that corruption, the lack of credibility, and malfeasance goes.”
