Congressional Republicans are advancing a bill that would impose strict new voter registration requirements, including a mandate for registrants to present documents proving U.S. citizenship. However, tens of millions of Americans lack easy access to such documents, and critics warn the proposal would significantly suppress voter participation.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, known as the SAVE Act, was first introduced last year amid false claims from President Trump and his allies that noncitizens posed a major threat to the 2024 election. Now that he has won, they are aggressively pushing the bill forward.

Last week, Congresswoman Deborah Ross convened a roundtable with Emancipate NC and partner organizations, including You Can Vote, North Carolina For The People, North Carolina League of Women Voters, NC Black Alliance, NC Asian Americans Together, Democracy North Carolina, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, and El Pueblo. She emphasized why the SAVE Act poses a direct threat to democracy, warning that it paves the way for an oligarchy—where a small, elite group consolidates power.

Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. Without them, we lose our voice, our influence, and our ability to shape our future. If this bill passes at the federal level, similar laws could soon emerge in North Carolina—where voter suppression efforts like HB 127 are already underway.
