Join us at Duke Divinity School on November 9, at 6:30 pm, for a panel discussion about issues at the intersection of prison and LGBTQ rights. Strategic Director Elizabeth Simpson will join her former client, Amanda Marriner, a formerly-incarcerated queer woman, for an open dialogue at an in-person event.
Elizabeth assisted Amanda and her wife, Sandy Marriner, to get married in 2019 in the first same-sex marriage performed inside a North Carolina prison. Elizabeth also represented Sandy in multiple venues seeking her compassionate release from prison during the COVID-19 pandemic, including as a plaintiff in the NAACP v. Cooper litigation, a habeas petition, and a parole application. Sandy was released on parole in March 2021 and lives in Durham with Amanda.
