A Community Forum Hosted by Emancipate NC & People’s Alliance

📅 Monday, October 20, 2025 · 7:00 – 8:30 PM

📍 People’s Solidarity Hub, 1805 W. Chapel Hill Rd (Teal Building), Durham, NC 27707

Join Emancipate NC and the People’s Alliance for an evening of conversation, learning, and collective action as we explore the question:

How do jails impact families?

This community forum will bring together people directly affected by incarceration, local advocates, and neighbors to discuss how detention affects not only those behind bars, but also their loved ones. Together, we’ll share stories, raise concerns, and begin building a vision for justice and public safety rooted in community care—not punishment.

Facilitators:

  • Dedan Waciuri, Organizer, Emancipate NC
  • Toia Potts, Organizer, Emancipate NC

Both will share insight and lived experience on how incarceration impacts families and how we can work toward systemic change.

Forum Goals:

  • Build deeper community engagement in local justice advocacy
  • Share ideas directly with Durham’s elected officials
  • Begin shaping proposals for budget priorities and collective action

Tentative Schedule:

  • 7:00 – 7:10 PM: Welcome
  • 7:10 – 7:40 PM: Panel Discussion — Voices with Direct Experience
  • 7:40 – 7:50 PM: Audience Q&A
  • 7:50 – 8:30 PM: Community Discussion & Next Steps
